"When bringing a new dog to their home, we recommend getting settled into a reliable routine with plenty of exercise right off the bat!" says Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. "Long walks and trips to the dog park are great ways to tire your pup out so they have less desire to get into things at home. Teaching your dog that the crate is a safe space for them to stay when you're not home, taking them out on regular intervals and rewarding desirable behavior are all great ways to set a routine."
Does your dog whine and cry every time you leave the house? Perhaps it starts before you can even put on your shoes. Have you ever come back to a shredded bed, or to get your keys and return to poo and pee even though you just took your dog out 10 min ago? If so, you may be dealing with a dog that is suffering from issues with being alone, more commonly known as Separation Anxiety. When exhibiting this type of behavior, it's important to remember that your dog is not being spiteful or trying to make you feel guilty. She is actually suffering from a panic attack. This is not just a figurative statement, in fact, cortisol levels in the blood and saliva increase in a dog suffering from anxiety. Many times, they are actually feeling panicked.
Adopting a dog is a big decision. Your life will change for many years to come. We have dreams and plans about all the things we want to do together with our new four-legged friend. We want the new dog to be harmonious and happy and blend in seamlessly into our existing life. Sometimes that happens and other times a dog need more support fand it takes a greater adjustment to get the dog there.
It is getting hot outside and you need help getting your dog's energy out, but want to keep them safe too! The good news is that just like physical exercise makes a dog tired, so does mental stimulation.
Enrichment is essential to any animal’s life. It gives them a chance to work their “brain muscles”, to have some control in their environment and its enjoyable. Indoor cats especially benefit from enrichment. Many times, we think about food, water, and a litterbox but cats have other needs including hunting, playing and exploring. This is where enrichment items come in!
